Country Overview

India is a regionally and ethnically diverse nation with strong economic growth; however, the benefits of this growth are not enjoyed evenly throughout the country. There is a significant gap emerging between richer and poorer states in India and there are substantial inequalities in access to education, health care and economic prospects that reflect ethnic, gender and geographical differences. Climate change threatens India, due to its vulnerability to droughts, cyclones and rising sea levels.

The World Health Organization has outlined that India’s main health care concerns include access to safe water, adequate sanitation and HIV/AIDS.

Projects supported by AFAP:

Child Learning Centre Project

AFAP began a 3-year project in Nandyal with our partner VORDS (Voluntary Organisation of Rural Development Society), to facilitate and support the elimination of child labour in cottonseed production fields. This project is funded by the Monsanto Fund and aims at promoting the Rights of the Children for their proper growth, nourishment, education, play and development.

The children of the agri-workers in Kurnool are deprived of health, education, proper growth and development.

The majority of the students are from small villages, most of them have never had access to toilet or washing facilities previously, and have very limited knowledge of the world.

For those children who drop out of school or who have not attended school at the right age, systems that cater for their specific needs and mainstream them back into formal or non-formal education are still inadequate.

To improve the situation for the betterment of the children, AFAP has developed a program for the Monsanto Fund: AFAP has assisted with the construction of accommodation, kitchen/dining and amenities facilities for the Navajeevan School for the Deaf and supported the accelerated education of 300 children allowing them reentry to mainstream education or to a better vocational option.

The aim is not only to eliminate child labour from the fields but also lead the way for all cotton farms in the target area to improve village life generally and provide education and life skills for all the children.
