Country Overview
With significant upheaval in recent decades, Cambodia faces the immense development challenges of rebuilding its social, political and economic infrastructure. Approximately 70% of Cambodia's work force is engaged in subsistence farming, rather than commercial agriculture and as a result Cambodia's rice yields are the lowest in the region. This adds to Cambodia's food insecurity which according to the World Health Organisation has left 35% of children below 5 years old underweight.
*********
Access to education is improving rapidly in Cambodia thanks to budget increases, but the standard of education varies greatly between rural and urban areas. Health care infrastructure is overstretched due to the fact that Cambodia has the highest rate of HIV/AIDS infection in the region and a high percentage of disabled people as a result of landmines. |

PROGRAMS SUPPORTED BY AFAP:
Project Cambodia
The Buddhist Library Cambodia Project is involved in health and education. The construction of concrete rainwater tanks at schools in 4 provinces has resulted in an improvement in children’s health since they are now drinking clean water. English, computer and sewing classes are now possible in the evenings since the installation of solar panels in several schools. Children come on foot or by bicycle from miles around to participate in these free classes.
The Buddhist Library Cambodia Project is supported by AFAP and the Buddhist Library of Sydney and Paget Sayers.
