Amatakiloa 'ae Fefine Tonga

Amatakiloa 'ae Fefine Tonga is one of Tonga Trust core and longest running programs. It started in 1978 with activities focusing on improving water supply, sanitation, kitchen and fencing of homes. Today Amatakiloa mobilises women to identify their development needs such as improving skills on healthy diet, environmental management, tree planting, reviving traditional skills on folding mats, water quality improvement, sanitation and health, and awareness of their own rights and capacities.

People and Policy Project

The main objective of the People and Policy Project (PPP) is to link people in the communities with government policies. The PPP is implemented in three consecutive phases. The first phase is empowerment through raising community’s awareness on governance issues. The second phase is empathy which involves TV and radio programs, newsletters and others. The final phase is engagement of government and strengthening the connection between people and government policies.

Good Governance, Leadership, Human Rights and Civic Education

A review was conducted in 5 villages participating in the project - Lapaha and Popua/Patangata in Tongatapu, Sapa’ata in ‘Eua, Tongaleleka/Hihifo in Ha’apai, and Neiafu in Vava’u, to improve and strengthened existing governing structures and thereby strengthen linkages with government policies and other development agencies.

In July 2007 the first village council in Tonga at Lapaha village was established. It will become an annual event to mark achievements of work of women, youth, farmers, fisher folk and students throughout the year. Through this opportunity, people can participate in decision-making processes in Tonga, demonstrate a sense of self-reliant and capability in driving the development process themselves, by breaking away from the traditional centralised system and top-down decision making.
