Country Overview
Zambia has one of the highest rates of HIV/AIDS infection in the world at over 15% (2007). The incidence of infection is higher in urban areas as opposed to rural areas and the rate of girls with HIV/AIDS aged 15-19 is four times higher than the rate for boys.
Deforestation is increasing as a result of many people cutting down trees for cooking fuel and charcoal production; this is causing much of Zambia to become more arid. There are fears that this could further limit Zambia’s development since it already suffers from periodic droughts and flooding.

In Zambia, AFAP works with a small Jesuit mission in the Chikuni Parish. Located in a very poor rural area, local people have limited access to health services. Work focuses on HIV/AIDS prevention and awareness, along with training and support programs for sufferers and their carers.
